Journeys

Before we left home I had booked flights, accommodation and a rental car to fly from a Nice to Strasbourg to attend the European patchwork and quilting exhibition for one day. Air France decided to go on strike this week, good on them!! They cancelled my flight to Strasbourg. Anyway I decided to get the train – a 9 hour journey. I set off from Villefranche to Nice by train, got to Nice and needed to print out my online ticket, only thing is I couldn’t understand the machine, so I lined up at the information counter, got to the front and asked if the guy could speak English, he said no and asked if I could speak French, no luck, I was a bit worried as my departure time was fast approaching. I decided to approach a security guard and asked him if he could help he could speak English but told me to queue up at the ticket counter, the queue would’ve been half an hour long, sigh, I must have looked upset cos he got another guard, who spoke better English to help me and I explained to him that I would miss the train and I just needed to get the ticket printed. He took me to the front of the queue, yay, got my ticket printed and headed off to check which platform I needed to be on …… My train was delayed for 30 minutes, oh dear, could’ve waited in the queue after all. Meanwhile this is what the others were doing.

They were in Monaco, they didn’t like it and only stayed a couple of hours.

Meanwhile I was on my way …. They guard came through checking tickets and spoke to some of us in the carriage, all French, I couldn’t understand any of it, but he kept saying Marseillies and gesturing that he would look after me, anyway the train stopped in Marseillies and everyone got off, a lady gestured to me to follow her, so I blindly followed along, we got onto another train, guards and all, it was a nicer train and off we went, very fast, luckily I made my connection at Lyon and arrived in Strasbourg at 10pm. Meanwhile I was trying to contact the rental car company at the airport to advise them I would be late picking up the car but kept getting a French answering machine, eventually I got through and she spoke English, yay, she said they were closing so made arrangements to get the car at 8am in there morning. Got a taxi to my hotel.  Got to the airport the next morning to get my rental car, o !@&$ I had my international license but not my NZ drivers license, shit, they wouldn’t let me hire without it, what the hell was I going to do now, I had one day to view this massive exhibition, the rental lady told me there may be a train to the place. I went to information, they said to get back into the Strasbourg train station and do it from there, o boy I was totally p’d off.  Anyway off I go back to Strasbourg and thankfully eventually find an English speaking ticket lady, I have to take a train and then a bus, time is marching on, off I go and finally arrive at the exhibition at 11am. The exhibition is held between 4 villages the main one being Saint Marie aux Mine.
This quilt exhibition totally takes over this village and it is inundated with women, and a few men, they take advantage of it and put out little stalls and sell things, I was too busy looking at the more than 20 exhibits to take too many photos of the surrounding areas.

Quiet day relaxing

Was nice to mooch around today after the hectic few days

We decided to have a proper dinner so went to a restaurant two doors down, had an amazing meal
I ordered kind prawns, I have never seen prawns this big, it was so delicious, we all had a great meal

Trev and I shared this dessert, chocolate fondant with red berry nice cream, sensational
Then they bought this out for us to share
Yum. It was a bit quieter today as we have discovered its noisy when there is a cruise ship visiting, they are here almost everyday.

Villefranche Sur Mer

We caught the train from Paris to Villefranche, it was about 5 and a half hours. Our apartment is sensational right in the middle of the village and on the waters edge.

The view from our window.
Trev in the window
This village is so lovely, it’s warm, approx 24 degrees and doesn’t drop much at night,

Our room is lovely, we have no air conditioning, but have fans, thank god, it’s very noisy at night, but the fan blocks out some noise, lol

Monet’s Garden

Jenny and I set off to the shops this morning we had a short couple of hours before I had to leave to go to Monet’s Garden.

Jenny dropped a few Euros in an amazing mall, the shear size of Paris never ceases to amaze us for for approx 2.2million people it’s a humming place, I would estimate that it must treble in size with tourists. It’s a shopping Mecca, some of the areas are for looking only eh!
I was collected in a wee shuttle with some other ladies and we headed off to Giverny to Claude Monet’s house and garden, wow what a beautiful, peaceful, inspiring haven, his studio is to die for and the water garden in particular is sensational.

After such a beautiful afternoon we drove back through wee villages on the way to Paris.  I had the best day.  After dinner we headed out to the ‘Paris by night’ tour,  will put the photos up tomorrow.

Day 3 Paris

This morning we had a wee sleep in till 7, lol. Trev and I headed off to the Louvre. It’s very impressive and you can take photos.

This is the scrum to see Mona
We all met up for lunch and did a river boat cruise.

We headed home for a snack and a snooze cos we were booked into the Moulin Rouge show and dinner at 11pm. The show was amazing and the costumes (what there was of them) were outstanding, the only thing was we didn’t get dinner, oops so on the way home at 1.30am we had to stop in at a kebab shop in the red light district and get dinner, lol

Amazing Day

We boarded the hop on hop off bus this morning and headed off on our amazing tour of the City of Paris starting with Norte Dame.

Then off to the champs-élysées and the arc de triompe

 And climbed to the top
A quick bite to eat and then on to the Eiffel Tower. Nothing had prepared us for the shear size of it.

After an hour’s wait we were off in the elevator to the second level, where we queued for another hour, it was a bit freaky going in the second lift and the huge number of people in the tower was over-whelming but it was so worth it the views were sensational, spectacular
We had run out of time to see any more and headed home.

We had a delicious dinner at our ‘local’ yum

Here is a pic of our room

Welcome to Paris

We left London on Friday and travelled on the Euro Star train to Paris. Arrived to a beautiful warm sunny day.  As we were exiting the station we were approached by a nice Frenchman who offered us a ride to our hotel in his luxury van, the cost 85€. We were unsure about this, I had read in the guidebook that taxis don’t like taking more than 3 passengers plus the queue for taxis was a mile long, it was hot and we had large luggage, so to be sure we approached another man and asked how much his van was, he quoted the same, so we sucked it up and took the van. It was a very nice black luxury van and we were given free water!!  We arrived at our hotel and checked in, I asked the lovely lady how much it should cost for a van from the station to our hotel she said €18, WTF!!! We’ve been ripped, and after looking on the map, the station was just near our hotel, sigh.

We headed out for a nearby cafe and a celebratory drink to toast our arrival in Paris. Found one on the corner with a lovely Frenchman waiter, he was funny and very helpful.  We ordered champers and cheese, yum.
Just a wee aside, when we got to Singapore, we headed for a bar in the airport, playing an all blacks game, ordered drinks and Trev went to pay, he was promptly handed the card back …….. It was his NZ eftpos card not his visa, sigh! Anyway we have those cash passport cards but only with Euro on them, so at this Paris cafe it was his first opportunity to use it.  He heads up to the bar to pay, a few minutes later, he calls out to us asking where the # button is on the eftpos terminal ???? The guy calls out for the wife to come help, Jenny goes in lol, he asks if she’s the wife, Jenny says she’s the second wife.  (Trev had stored the pin for this card in his phone) Anyway I head in and remind him that he had put random numbers in his phone with the pin to foil anyone who might take his phone and try to use the card, the guy was hilarious, Trev completes the transaction and we head off to have a look around. We are near the Scare Coeur.
We climb the 300 steps to the top, awesome views.

There are guys hanging around here with boxes of Heineken selling individual bottles, one guy must have got tired of selling and drunk his box, he was surrounded by security trying to make him sit up etc but he was very floppy, lolling on the ground and couldn’t sit up, so funny.

We had a light dinner and then had the best nights sleep, so much better having air conditioning and quiet room, yay.

Last day in London

Phew yesterday was action packed as we tried to accommodate everything we all wanted to do. We were up early and had breakfast at our usual spot yum! Then off on the underground to the Tower of London.

When we came out the queues were long so we were happy we had got there early.
Absolutely amazing.  Couldn’t take photos in some parts, the Crown Jewels were incredible and even a non-royal like Trev thoroughly enjoyed it.  Then off on huge tube, thanks Jenny T for the Oyster card, very handy, to Westminster to go through the Abbey.
We had to queue for about 15 mins but it was soo worth it, so amazing, weren’t allowed to take photos but got some in the cloisters and outside.  Got talking to one of the guides an ex-policeman who was really interesting and told us lots of stories about the royal family and the ones buried in there Abbey.

This photo was a plaque showing James Cook’s circumnavigation.  After the Abbey we headed off for refreshments to Harrods.

I didn’t realise how massive the store is, mind blowing.  Headed to the Tea Room and had lunch, pea and ham soup with sandwiches. I had English rose tea, made from roses.

Had a wonder around the store, Trev walking around with his mouth gaping, mainly at the prices lol.

This table was £250,000.00!! We had a look at the Christmas department.

Then on the way home stopped off at Notting Hill. Called in to see Jamie Oliver. An awesome shop and cafe.

I am totally over my ‘flying nun on steroids’ hairdo, you know what I’m talking about Helen, so called into a salon in Notting Hill for a wash and blow dry…… Turns out the salon is owned by a kiwi!!! Think I paid top dollar tho @ £39!!! Last night we went out for dinner with friends of Jenny and Kelvin at a local pub, lovely.
All packed up now and off to Paris today.

Bath

Awake at 5am this morning, the sleeping is getting better.
Yesterday we went to Bath for the day, an hour and a half train ride from London.
It is a touristy small city, very old and has hot water baths there. We did the hop on hop off bus to get a good over view and had a Cornish pasty for lunch.  The others looked around the centre and watched buskers while I caught the shuttle to the American Museum to the Kaffe Fasset and gold work embroidery exhibitions. I don’t know how to add a link to words on the iPad, so here it is http://americanmuseum.org/about-the-museum/current-exhibitions/kaffe-2014-the-colourful-world-of-kaffe-fassett/
It was a great exhibition

There was also a display of embroidery in the local cathedral. (For the embroidery ladies) This alter cloth was done by Jane Lemon and a group she belongs to

It was a stunning day and very warm. The train ride back was fast (125 miles per hour!) we headed out to Picadilly Circus last night to the hustle and bustle and we to Thriller Live a tribute show to Michael Jackson, followed his life from Jackson 5 to his last hits, the cast were amazing the dancing was incredible and one particular guy was very believable as MJ a great night.

This pic was taken at half time those two people up the front had nothing to do with the show.

Every morning we go to breakfast to a franchise here called Pret a Manger the food is all organic, freshly created on site and delicious, we also went there last night for a salad for dinner and Jenny and Kelvin found one at Bath and got their lunch from there yesterday as well, lol. (Hayley, the little cup on left is coconut yoghurt, yum) the little cup with lid is espresso, big cup of peppermint tea made with the large silk tea bags so yummy.
We have managed to conquer the underground here and I have an app on my phone that tells us what trains to catch to get to where we want, it is a life (and marriage) saver.
Today we are going to the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and Harrods.
